Double Up For Young Prosser

The 31st playing of the Heart of England Junior Merit took place at West Midlands Police on June 1st.

Whether the rainy morning and threatening skies put off competitors is not known but a small but select field of 8 turned out to compete for a title held over the years by some players now prominent in the higher echelons of the Warwick & Worcester.

Conditions were tricky and the green lacking in pace following an early afternoon downpour.

The top of the draw saw the winners of the previous two competitions destined to meet in the semi final, these being 2006 Champion Scott Follis of Moseley Cricket Club and reigning champion Ryan Prosser of King George V.

Before this clash of the titans could take place both had to get passed competitors from League new boys Kings Norton ex-Service. This was duly achieved with Ryan beating Rob Eales 21-3 whilst Scott found Jason Keane a tougher nut to crack before running out a 21-13 winner.

In the bottom half of the draw Keiran Cook of Black Horse raced to a 20-0 lead over his opponent Liam Batty from Kings Norton Ex before to the relief of his supporters and no doubt himself Liam got himself on the scoreboard. The respite was short-lived however as Keiran finished the job next end

The fourth quarter final saw Kings Norton Ex club-mates Tom Hickey and Daniel Bowater pitted against each other and this proved to be the tightest game of the day, Despite never holding the lead Tom managed to get himself in a position to win at 19-20 but it was Daniel who put in the telling bowl to progress to a meeting with Keiran.

The two semi finals looked closely matched on paper but both went a similar way with Ryan and Daniel taking a firm grip on their respective matches and emerging victorious 21-12 and 21-13 respectively despite the best efforts of Scott and Keiran.

As the final got underway it soon became obvious that if Ryan was to retain his title he was going to have to work hard to do so and it was Daniel who was producing the goods racing to an 11-3 lead and looking cool and in control but Ryan was not to be denied and on getting his hands on the jack struck out for the corner and put on a fine display of corner bowling resulting in a flurry of twos.

Despite Daniel finally regaining the jack the game had now gone and Ryan promptly finished the job 21-13.

Chairman Chris Smith thanked West Midlands Police for the use of their facilities before calling upon Heart of England Life-Member Marjorie Robinson to present the trophy to Ryan.
